Planting the Seeds for a Movement
Some contributions are visible from the outside. Others work quietly behind the scenes, laying the foundation for others to grow. The Food Council MRA has done both nowhere more clearly than in its role as a founding partner.
When Stadslandbouw Amsterdam took its first steps, the Food Council was there. When Voedselpark Amsterdam was established, the Food Council provided board members. The same goes for Voedselcirel Amsterdam and the platform Van Amsterdamse Bodem. In each case, the Food Council helped build the structures that now support thousands of Amsterdam residents.
Today, these organizations are deeply rooted in the city. They connect urban dwellers to regional food, advocate for local policy, and give residents a tangible way to be part of the food system. Thousands of Amsterdammers engage with them whether by visiting an urban farm, buying local produce, or participating in food education.
None of that would have happened without the early commitment to create space for these organizations to exist. The Food Council MRA helped plant the seeds. Now, the city is harvesting the results.
What changed? A handful of foundational organizations took root. And together, they helped turn regional food policy from an idea into a movement embraced by thousands.
